He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action against the enemy near Wesel, Germany on March 24, 1945. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the airborne crossing of the Rhine River. He would share that going into battle his only weapon was a pair of bandage sheers. He served for 3 years in World War II as an airborne medic.
